Purpose

Today, I want to discuss Purpose!

In this discussion, I want to reference what one of my mentors – Jim Rohn talks about in regards to purpose.

But first, let’s understand the meaning and value of a mentor. A “mentor” is someone who is experienced in a topic or subject in which you choose to gain further insight from or about. A “mentor” is someone we would call a trusted adviser! Normally, this is an older, wiser person that is trying to transfer their wisdom to a younger person. However, if you are willing to always be searching and learning, you can learn from anyone who has more experience than you in something of value to you!

So, now let’s talk about Purpose and the unique Power aspect of Purpose!

It has been said that a person who has a purpose in their life, is a person that has something to go for, to live for, and something that adds value and meaning to their life!

One writer described it this way; for some people, a purpose is something that becomes a magnificent obsession.

Well, for you and I, maybe it doesn’t need to be so dramatic as a magnificent obsession; but it does have to be something that does something to us, something that moves us, something that pulls us, something that gives us a reason to get up and live, and especially something that will pull or prod us in our future!

One of the things that have such power, is the power of influence (a topic we will discuss in a later post). Now, there are many types of influence on our lives, however, the one I want to reference in regards to Purpose, is the influence of the past.

Some people allow their past to control them, their thoughts and their actions tend to direct their lives. From my point of view, they allow the past to pull them back, way back and even further back. It is as if their past has the power to shackle them to that time and that incident! It would seem that circumstance is what controls or drives all of their decisions!

Then there are those people who allow their past to be a driving force for their life! It is usually a force for the good, meaning that they are going to do something that makes sure that whatever tried to shackle them in their past will never, ever, be able to do it to them again! That past gives them a future purpose!

And then there are some people who always seemed to be pulled sideways. I love the way Jim Rohn says it: “They are distracted by the distractions”! In a simple way, they are not clear on their purpose or direction and therefore, shiny objects can quickly and easily pull them off course!

But,  here is what is so powerful about Purpose: If you have a specific purpose or even a list of high purposes that have meaning to you in your life, then you have something very powerful! You see, this Purpose will pull you towards the future, your future! And the more powerful the Purpose is, the stronger it pulls you forward!

Here is another cool, great and unique advantage of the Power of Purpose; if you have a Specific Purpose for the future, then it will pull you through all kinds of challenges, trials, circumstance, and all kinds of difficulty!

Now, what if you don’t have a strong Specific Purpose for the future? Well, then it’s easy to get swallowed up by a bad day. Yes, we all have a bad day every now and then. However, if you do not have a Purpose, then one bad day turns into another and that will eventually turn into a bad week; and when those weeks add up, it’s easy to be almost annihilated by a bad or poor month! Then as those months pile up, it is as if you sometimes seem to almost disappear beneath the waves of a tumult year! Then that year becomes one of the things that has a bad past influence and will pull you backwards – IF you don’t have something to pull you beyond that year!

So, if you want something to pull you through all kinds of challenges, trials, tribulations, disappointments, heartbreaks, all kinds of difficulty and all the things that seem to come at you (and you know they do and will come), then you have got to have something going on in your life that goes way beyond today! Something that goes beyond next week, and goes beyond the next month, and something that goes way beyond just this year! It must be something that pulls you into the future! Your specifically designed future!

And the more clear that it is, the stronger it will pull you, the more dynamic that it is, the more that it will affect your life, your heart, your spirit, and your soul – your very being!

Another beautiful thing about a Specific Purpose is that it will also bring creativity into your life! This will help you create imagination, to help you get your mind working on how to achieve that Specific Purpose and if you will allow and trust that creativity, then your mind will work towards that Purpose. And then if your heart works and if your spirit works and if you have good input that produces creativity and good ideas, well, then I am telling you that there is not anything that you can’t accomplish – IF you have the Power of a Specific Purpose!!

So, that leads me to my concluding remarks as a question to you;

What Purpose(s) do you have in your life?

Have you identified your Specific Purpose(s)?

If not, then when are you going to do so?

It is never too late! You are never too old to come up with a Specific Purpose for the rest of your life!
